Berlin Brandenburg Airport Spends £4,000 A Day Because It Can’t Turn The Lights Off

It’s bad enough that the Berlin Brandenburg airport is years behind schedule and millions of dollars over budget. Now officials can add a freaking huge electrical bill into the mix, because it turns out this airport can’t turn off the lights.

The lights are staying on at BER 24/7 because, as the airport planner says, it’s “not technologically advanced enough” to control the lighting. As it stands right now, Berlin Brandenburg is spending £4,000 a day because of this lighting problem. The airport won’t be finished until 2017, so unless the issue is fixed, the airport is going to shelling out a lot of cash on lighting for the next four years on a building that’s not even finished.

And it turns out that the lights are just the tip of the iceberg. Apparently, there is a to-do list of 20,000 things that need to be put right. Just a few things on the list that need fixing are fire extinguishers that don’t work and doors that won’t open. On the positive side, at least they have four years to fix these issues.

We’re scratching our head on this one. We have this little thing called a “light switch” and it magically turns the lights on and off. Or maybe BER could install the Clapper, so they can control the lights by clapping their hands. Hey, it’s worth a shot.

She misses those little packages of peanuts they used to give out on flights and doesn’t mind sitting in the aisle seat. Amy likes writing about the sordid underbelly of airport intrigue with strange and usual stories that probably won’t make the 6 o’clock news.
