Thanks to all of you who voted in last week’s worst airline poll. Ryan Air and the entire US airline industry battled it out throughout the week, but Ryan Air won the title of “Worst Airline flying today”. A hearty congrats to them!
Runner’s Up include: (3) United Airlines (4) American Airlines (5) Us Airways (6) Air India (7) KLM and Philippines Airlines.
So why does Ryan Air suck? To those of you who voted for Ryan Air, let us know why we need to avoid this airline. Share your horror stories.

Hallo. I do not agree with you. It is true that Ryanair does not offer snacks or coffees, but the prices are so good that traveling across Europe is sometimes cheaper than covering 50 km in Italy.
Have to say I ALWAYS fly with Ryanair: I HATE IT BUT I LOVE IT. I live in Valencia and the connection with East Middlands was perfect for me during my Erasmus exchange in the UK. So far, everything went fine. Nice connections with Europe, always on time, had quiet flights, if u check in online and only take hand baggage is economic. I really don´t care if they don´t give snacks (I buy anything I want at the airport before boarding)… the main problem with this company is the luggage policy. I had to take with me all my winter clothes and my suitcase was too heavy, and obviously I paid a little fortune, specially when my Erasmus was over. Nearly 200 €, way too much for me. Each passenger (excluding infants) is permitted to carry one piece of cabin baggage on board (free of charge), which weight cannot be more than 10 kilos. Each passenger is permitted to check in up to 3 bags with a maximum combined weight of 15kgs, subject to the payment of the applicable checked baggage fees. A discounted checked baggage fee is charged for each piece of checked baggage booked online (around 20 €). Excess baggage fee: 15 €/kilo!
Add airport taxes and insurance, and priority boarding! (optional)
The point is that in that wonderful Erasmus experience I met my bf, who is german. We had an amazing connection between my city and Baden Baden, which now doesn´t even exist because Ryanair is demanding from the government more economic helps… Last month had to fly over from Alicante. And had to sleep at the airport since my flight was the first flight of the day. But hey, it doesn´t have anything to do with Ryanair, I guess…
I travel a lot with Ryanair, and it is good if you know how to use it. I always take only hand luggage, and check in online. Sometimes, I travel for 10 Euros both ways, and now for me it is the only way to make a cheap connection from Scockholm to Lithuania – I fly to Riga, and then take a bus. Recently I went to Berlin, I bought my ticket just a couple of days before the flight, and payed 100 Euros including the flight + connections. When you buy the ticket, you have to consider all expenses – getting to the far away airport, probably at night, maybe even sleeping at the airport. Luggage, if you got such. Credit card fee. Getting to the far-away airport. Then you add up and see if it is worth the trouble. The good side of the airports out in the nowhere is no trouble, you can be there just a bit ore than 30 mins before the flight, pass security in no time with your printed boarding pass, and off you go.
While living in London, I used Ryanair on several occasions.. as long as you understand they are a budget airline… then thats the service you recieve. The most costly mistake was booking a flight from Stansted to Brussels, that was diverted due to the fog to an airport over 100km away from Brussels. We were made to pay our own taxi fare into the city and were not re-imbursed at all from the company – stating as an unfortunate incident. I then flew Easyjet from then on..
Ryanair is a scam, I traveled only once with them, it’s the only time in my life
(and I’ve been travelling by plane since I’m a kid, I’m 50 now) that I was denied boarding , because I was 5′ late , following a theft of my luggage! horrible!
On the other hand, I don’t understand the bad rep of AA, I traveled with them last winter (economy class), it was smooth and pleasant, after the likes of Ryanair you see the difference with a serious airline.
What sucks about Ryanair are
1) the luggage policy
2) the location of the airports
3) the fact that it usually costs an arm and a leg to get to the out-of-the-way airports Ryanair uses
4) the hidden fees like the credit card fee that you only see when you are almost through booking.
I could deal with Ryanair not serving any free food and drinks and being strict about boarding times, but the strict luggage policy and the location of the airports really take the cake. I much rather fly other budget airlines like Easyjet, Germanwings, AirBerlin, Whizzair, Tuifly, etc. who have better customer service in that regard.
Ryanair have not the economy class. I think Ryanair have only the toilet class. I can´t understand the people prefer fly with Ryanair?
Skimpy?
The skimpy can lead to serious consequences in the aviation. I warns for Ryanair!
How about the constant advertising and non stop talking…..and i can’t forget the smokeless cigarettes. But it’s cheap so I can deal with it….I did get really sick on one flight and had to pay 5 euro for a ginger ale…..not fun
Live in Den Haag Holland. Went to airport 100km south of Brussel by means of own car to take a flight to Venice. On the way back all flights canceled due to a ‘little’ snow. 1000 people screaming for a not existing alternate way to flight home or their ‘little’ money back. Had to pay for a taxi to get to the international airport of Venice and ended up spending 600,- for a 2 (50% useless) return flight to Amsterdam. Finally had to pickup my car 100km south of Brussel…. Lesson learned, never flight budget if you don’t like of have the time to deal with the worst case scenario!
